The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This included attempting to break his ankle monitor and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.
