Gerrard in frame for Glasgow Rangers reappointment after Russell Martin is sacked.

The Anfield icon is under serious review for a shock return to Rangers following the announced departure of manager Russell Martin.

The manager's ill-fated spell at Rangers comes to a close

The coach's ill-fated time at Rangers concluded with the gaffer departing the Falkirk Stadium via a back exit and a vehicle on standby after a level finish which left Rangers 11 points from the top of the premier division after just seven matches.

Angry fans had encircled the Rangers team bus in the stadium location, showing their discontent.

Ibrox directors hesitant to dismiss the manager

The Ibrox hierarchy had been reluctant to dismiss the coach, who was only brought in in last month, despite strong protests from fans.

However, there was an understanding that the manager's position had become unsustainable.

Rangers have won only one of their Premiership matches to date, which has been alongside poor displays in European competition.

In total, Martin managed only five wins of 17 fixtures, with a passive, muddled brand of football that won over few admirers.

“While all transition periods require some time, outcomes have failed to reach the club’s expectations,” stated a club announcement on the weekend.

“Deputy manager Gill, and first-team staff member Mike Williamson, will also be departing. Martin and his coaching team have worked exceptionally hard throughout their time at the club. We express gratitude for their efforts and wish them well for the next chapter.”

Steven Gerrard won the title with Rangers

The former England captain won the title with the Glasgow club in that campaign, their only championship since 2011.

His performance in Glasgow before then, coupled with struggles at Villa, creates uncertainty about his leadership skills.

Yet he is greatly respected by the very fanbase Rangers urgently require back on side.

The return of the Liverpool icon, who most recently coached in Saudi Arabia, would generate significant excitement.

The manager will also be conscious of what limited opportunities he has to be a manager in top-tier competitions.

Martin’s exit will heighten focus on Kevin Thelwell

The coaching change will increase pressure on Thelwell, the club's recruitment chief.

He had been strongly in favor of the coach while disclosing a transfer outlay of twenty million pounds in the off-season.

The former boss had signed a three-year contract.

The coach's past roles

The manager, who had previously coached MK Dons and the Swans, guided the Saints to elevation to the Premier League in 2024 after being brought in the prior offseason.

He was dismissed last winter after the Southampton managed only one win of their first 16 games.

He was appointed the interim boss's next in line in the summer, after the temporary manager had taken over from the fired the former manager in the earlier part of the year.
