Former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey Enters Not Guilty Plea to Accusations of Lying Congress

Former FBI director James the former director has denied the charges to giving untrue testimony to US legislators and hindering a legislative process.

His attorney entered the response representing him in a federal court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday.

Patrick Fitzgerald declared he would seek to have the proceedings dismissed for multiple factors including that his the accused, a critic of Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

James Comey was formally accused shortly after Trump urged his top legal official to take action against him.

In court on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer the legal representative advised the court they planned to submit multiple motions to dismiss the case before a court case, claiming the prosecution was retaliatory and that a government lawyer was unlawfully assigned to assume control of the case.

Mr Comey's proceedings was first handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who stepped down under pressure from the former president after his investigation into a different rival - the New York official - was unable to file indictments.

James Comey appeared in optimistic frame of mind as he entered the court on mid-week, chatting with his lawyers and making jokes. He was supported by his wife, Patrice Failor and daughter his daughter, a government attorney who the former government recently fired.

After listening to the magistrate recite his constitutional guarantees and the dual charges against him in court on mid-week, the defendant was asked if he comprehended the allegations.

"I do your honour. Appreciate it," he told the court.

Background Context

Mr Comey was the FBI Director from four years and was dismissed about four months into the former president's first term as president. At the moment, Mr Comey was overseeing an investigation into foreign election meddling and whether there were any links between the Russian government and the election effort.

Throughout his leadership, Mr Comey triggered a backlash from the Democratic party when he declared just immediately preceding the 2016 presidential election that he was probing presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Charges against Hillary Clinton were not pursued, causing criticism from conservative politicians as well.

Present Charges

Government attorneys assert James Comey gave untrue statements to the legislature during a congressional hearing in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the previous examination as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They claim he deceived the legislative body by saying he had not authorized an individual at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to leak to journalistic entities data about the government examinations.

Prosecutors also allege Mr Comey of "wrongfully trying to sway, block and delay" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.

Via social media the former director published to his social media after he was accused, he stated he was not guilty and alleged Donald Trump of acting like a "tyrant".

"Our household have understood for years that there are costs to standing up to Donald Trump," he stated. "We refuse to live on our kneeling."
"I'm innocent," he continued. "Thus initiate a court case."

The accusations against Mr Comey surfaced after Trump shared on online platforms calling for his chief prosecutor, Pam Bondi, charge James Comey and additional individuals.
