The Fianna Fáil nominee dropped out of Ireland's presidential race just weeks ahead of the election

Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin stated he is pulling out from the Irish presidential election with "immediate effect".

He was set to be a candidate among three vying for Ireland's head of state, together with TD Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael candidate Heather Humphreys.

Yet, late Sunday he announced via a statement that he "erred that was not in keeping with my character and his personal standards."

"Considering all these factors, I have decided to withdraw from the presidential election contest immediately and reunite with my loved ones," he declared in his announcement.

Further updates expected.
